Who We Are
A group of artists, writers, and educators
dedicated to art and culture. NEA is based in Chicago
with a growing community of contributors around the U. S.
At New Art Examiner we are dedicated to the in-depth criticism of contemporary art and culture. We are here to not only produce content but also foster a community of intellectual discourse and critical inquiry that holds visual art to a high standard of both formal and conceptual strength. We put the artist and the artwork above the markets of monetary, social, and political capital so that we may interrogate the experience an artwork generates for a viewing audience and the impact of that experience on shaping thought and meaning in the world.
In addition to examining the artist and artwork we critique the institutions that determine what artwork is deemed worthy of exhibition. We do not limit this analysis to institutions with outsize resources and rich legacies. Instead, we cover exhibitions spaces large and small, ranging from blue chip galleries and major museums to artist run workspaces and DIY pop-ups. Artwork and venues are treated with the same level of scrutiny, focusing on the experiential impact generated by formal and conceptual quality.
New Art Examiner is a platform for the curious and critical to explore the ideas the art world has to offer and reflect upon the experiences we have as people who engage with it. Our contributing writers and editors are invited to participate in our rigorous approach to critical inquiry and bring their own literary and artistic voices to the content we produce. Above all, we are committed to perpetuating the legacy of NAE co-founders, Jane Addams Allen and Derek Guthrie in maintaining an open forum for the serious discussion of issues in the arts. We invite anyone who is interested in participating in this forum to explore what we have to offer in our digital and printed content, and if so desired to reach out to us with thoughts, questions, and concerns.
